Love Me? Or Hate Me?

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007

Lady Sovereign is best known in the UK for both her past rivalry with failed rival Jentina and her collaboration with the Ordinary Boys on the single ‘9 to 5′, but, unlike many a popular UK singer, she’s fast becoming well known in the US for her rapping style, and during 2006 performed at gigs ranging from huge festivals like Lollapalooza and Coachella to her own sold out slots in smaller venues.

This success in America is clearly rubbing off on Lady Sovereign, for her vocal sounds awfully smug and clever-dick as she banters with Missy Elliot on the remix of latest release ‘Love Me Or Hate Me’. She notes during the chorus: “Love me or hate me/That is the question/If you love me then thank you/If you hate me then f*ck you.” This indepdent, confident approach epitomises Sov’s attitude absolutely perfectly.

There’s not much competition in the UK scene for Lady Sovereign at the moment, and whilst the production on the track is great, the sheer level of self-obsession evident on this track can make it rather unpleasant to listen to.
